It occurred to me that it is rare for a show to be named after a prop, so it was enjoyable to be able to create this for Wolf Trap’s The Magic Flute. The director wanted a very basic model: wooden dowel with amber jewels instead of holes. On a stage as large as the Filene Center’s, it’s difficult to make out much more detail than that anyway.
The bevel, trough, and inset grooves for jewels were cut into 1 1/4″ wooden dowel, 24″ long.
The flute was gold leafed and sealed with a latex polycrylic, and the jewels were set into the grooves.
